Windhoek Karneval Celebrates 70 Years with Grand Festivities and International Acts

WIKA2024

The Windhoek Karneval (WIKA), a cherished tradition in Windhoek, is set to celebrate its 70th anniversary with a spectacular series of events from April 4th to April 14th, 2024. This year’s theme, “Applause, Applause, Full Throttle Ahead”, encapsulates the spirit of joy and exuberance that WIKA has fostered over its storied history.

The 2024 celebration promises to be a landmark event, featuring outstanding performances by the HSO Band from Eschweiler in Germany and renowned Party-Schlager star Peter Wackel. Adding to the excitement, we are thrilled to announce the Namibian debut of “Die Höhner”, one of the most well-known Karneval bands from Cologne, in the Rhineland in Germany. Their presence on a Namibian stage is a testament to the international appeal and cultural significance of the WIKA.

President of the Windhoek Karneval, Holger Mentzel, expressed his enthusiasm for the milestone event: “This year is the 70th Karneval Celebration, and we, as the Karneval Committee, look forward to hosting one of the biggest and best events in the Namibian events calendar. The Windhoek Karneval is an all-inclusive event, and this year, with the involvement of many local sponsors, with international and local talent on the stage we aim to host an event that showcases the beauty of Windhoek while embracing our unique Namibian spirit of strength in our diversity. As a reminder – the Karneval traditions worldwide all have the same original and broadly celebrate freedom of speech, putting aside the daily stresses of life and equality, where politicians or nobility hand over the responsibilities of governing to the clowns & jesters. We are proud to be able to host this international tradition in Windhoek. The heart of Namibia is after all Windhoek!”

The 2024 WIKA is not only a celebration of the Karneval’s rich heritage but also a reflection of Namibia’s vibrant culture and the unity of its people. The event is expected to attract attendees from all walks of life, including locals, tourists, and Karneval enthusiasts from around the world.

Norbert Wurm, Official Spokesperson for the Windhoek Karneval says; “We are committed to making this year’s WIKA the most talked-about celebration in Namibia and aim to generate record-breaking attendance and engage the community in an unforgettable experience. While the roots of our Karneval are from Germany, the heart is local with a Namibian flair and hence we offer traditional German evenings (e.g. Royal ball and Prunksitzung) while also catering for the non-German speaking audience during our international evenings.
