This year marks a significant milestone in the history of the O&L Group, as it will celebrate its 100th year of existence. PnP Namibia has been part of the O&L Group journey for just over 2 decades, since the opening of its very first store at Wernhil Park in Windhoek in 1997. Doors of the Olunkono PnP store, which is situated at the Olunkono Mall in Ondangwa opened for the public on 18 March 2019, and currently employs 85 Namibians. According to the O&L Group Director: Corporate Affairs, Gideon Shilongo who represented the O&L Group at the official opening event, PnP Namibia currently employs more than 2100 Namibians at its 22 stores countrywide. Shilongo: “Through the opening of new stores and focusing on value addition in Namibia, we are cognizant of the critical role we play in supporting government’s Growth-at-Home strategy while strongly supporting the collective vision of eradicating poverty as outlined in the principles and goals of the Harambee Prosperity Plan (HPP). As such, Pick n Pay continues to support local entrepreneurs in growing their businesses by offering opportunities for ongoing mentorship, coaching and preferential procurement of locally-grown products. I commend our local farmers here in the north and elsewhere in the country, for your hard work and efforts to grow this sector despite the harsh economic times which we are all faced with. Furthermore, I want to encourage you to continue seeing the opportunity in the storm by identifying such opportunities that would advance our economy through local value add. The experience we deliver in our stores, the strength of our brand, our pursuit of perfection and the dedication of our great people in Pick n Pay always have been and continue to be the primary reasons for our existence and these are the determining factors in the pursuit of our purpose ‘Creating a future, enhancing life’ for everyone. I want to take the opportunity to thank YOU all for having been part of our 100-year journey. We all know that 100 years does not come around so easily for anyone or anything and we thank all Namibians for having enabled us to come this far.”
Shilongo further announced that PnP Olunkono has committed to support the Otala Combined School’s soup kitchen with a monthly sponsoring of gift cards accumulating to a total value of N$12 000 per annum.
In his remarks, King Fillimon Shuumbwa Nangolo noted that he was happy to see the O&L Group and Pick n Pay Namibia investing in the region and that the Oshana region has great potential to contribute significantly to national development and the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
Governor Ilimari during his statement congratulated the O&L Group on its 100th year of existence, and commended the group on its contributions to the Namibian economy. Ilimari: “We are inspired by the O&L Group’s commitment to its motto, creating a future, enhancing life. This is evident in the sustained developments and significant investments the company contributes to the economic growth and prosperity of Namibia. We are excited to have the Pick n Pay Namibia chain as part of our community.”
